The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said an Iranian oil tanker caught fire today after an attack off the Syrian coast, the first such attack in Syria since the civil war began 10 years ago, and that the fire was later extinguished without causing any casualties.
AFP reports that Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said it was unclear who carried out the attack.
We don’t know if the attack was carried out by Israel,” Abdel Rahman told AFP. The Iranian tanker was from Iran, not far from the (Syrian) port of Banias.” It is also unclear whether it was a drone or missile attack.
The state-run Syrian News Agency (SANA) quoted the oil ministry as saying that the tanker caught fire after a drone attack believed to have come from the direction of Lebanese waters, and that the fire was later extinguished.
