Chinese Communist Party’s “chief translator” assumes his new position, and in a single sentence, he has stated the “special requirements” for translators in the Communist Party

China’s Surf News reports that Zhang Lu, the “chief interpreter” who has appeared at many press conferences of the Communist Party of China (CPC) premier, has taken up his new post. Talking about how to translate for the Chinese Premier, Zhang Lu said the first thing is to have high political sensitivity. The special requirements of translators in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Communist Party of China are not ordinary translators, but “political translators”.

On April 23, Surfing News reporter found that the updated information in the “Translation Department” section of the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs shows that Zhang Lu has taken up the post of Deputy Director of the Translation Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The main responsibility of the Translation Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to be responsible for the translation of important foreign affairs activities, diplomatic documents and papers in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese, and to coordinate the professional training and business guidance of translators in various languages.

According to a 2014 report by the official media Xinhua, “Born in 1977, Zhang Lu is a 1996 student of the International Law Department of the Diplomatic Academy and studied diplomacy at a London university, where she received a master’s degree. He is now the deputy director of the English Department of the Translation Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is the chief translator for Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao.”

Since then, Zhang Lu has been the Director of the Spanish-Portuguese Division of the Translation Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Zhang Lu has served as an interpreter at many of Wen Jiabao’s and Li Keqiang’s premier press conferences.

Talking about how to translate for the Chinese Communist Party premier, the CCTV article describes that, in Zhang Lu’s opinion, to work as a translator for leaders, one must first have a high level of political sensitivity.
