Japan’s defense minister revealed that the United States, Japan and France will conduct joint military exercises in the Kyushu region from May 11 to 17. Japanese media pointed out that this joint exercise of the three countries can be seen as a check on the Chinese Communist Party to carry out maritime expansion.
Kyodo News reported that Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi said at a press conference on Friday (April 23) that the Land Self-Defense Force will conduct joint exercises with the U.S. Marine Corps and the French Army from May 11 to 17.
Nobuo Kishi said the joint military exercise aims to strengthen cooperation with the U.S. and France to further improve the SDF’s tactics and capabilities in defending the island. The drill site is the Sagura Barracks in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture, and the Kirishima drill site across Ezo City, Miyazaki Prefecture, and Chungsui Town, Kagoshima Prefecture.
The defense minister also said that the air force will also participate in the exercise, conducted in the waters and airspace west of Kyushu. At the same time, the French Navy and the Maritime Self-Defense Force will also conduct joint exercises.
The report noted that France also has territory in the Pacific Ocean, and from this year (2021) to increase joint exercises with Japan and the United States to strengthen cooperation. The joint exercise of the three countries can be seen as a joint effort to check the maritime expansion of the Chinese Communist Party.
The Central News Agency reported that Nobuo Kishi mentioned in his speech on Thursday evening the activities of the Chinese Communist Party’s maritime police ships in the Diaoyutai Islands (Japan’s Senkaku Islands), as well as the increasingly frequent activities in the East China Sea and South China Sea, and said that “China (the Chinese Communist Party) is aggression step by step in inconspicuous places, with the ultimate goal of causing a total change in the status quo. (Japan) cannot accept such a situation”.
