Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced details of his $100 million carbon capture prize Thursday local time.
Musk’s relatively new charity, the Elon Musk Foundation, will sponsor the event, and the $100 million prize will be the largest the organization has disbursed to date. As the second richest man in the world, Musk has come under criticism for his lagging performance in philanthropy. Since then, he has pumped money into a number of organizations and causes.
During Thursday’s broadcast, Musk also talked about space travel to Mars, where he aims to transport and colonize humans via SpaceX-launched rockets.
Musk asked himself, “Is this an escape route for the rich?” “No, it’s not,” he said with a laugh.
Musk also warned that “there could be a bunch of deaths” at the start of the Mars expedition, but said it was as dangerous as anything associated with exploration before.
Musk warned back in 2018 that being among the first Mars colonists would not be very attractive. He said there was a misconception that Mars bases would be “an escape route for the rich.
But Musk said, “That’s simply not the case. For those who go to Mars, the journey will be very dangerous. Just like Ernest Shackleton (Ernest Shackleton) advertising the Antarctic expedition: difficult, dangerous, likely to die there, cheers to those who survive!”
Musk said, “In the beginning, there may be people who want to go to Mars, including those who are excited about the adventure, but this kind of adventure is fraught with danger.”
