US-Russia tensions! Russia expels 10 U.S. diplomats in Russia until 5/21

Russia’s relations with Europe and the United States have recently become more tense. In addition to expelling diplomats from Ukraine and the Czech Republic, the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned U.S. Deputy Ambassador Bart Gorman to Moscow on May 21, listing 10 U.S. Embassy personnel in Russia as “persona non grata” and requiring them to leave the country by midnight on May 21. The U.S. ambassador to Moscow, Bart Gorman, summoned 10 U.S. embassy personnel in Russia as “persona non grata” and demanded that they leave by midnight May 21.

Russia has recently been at loggerheads with Ukraine and the Czech Republic over territorial issues and a 2014 arsenal bombing that killed two people, with Russia not only expelling diplomats from Ukraine and the Czech Republic, but also threatening to take further retaliatory measures. The U.S. also recently ordered sanctions against 30 Russian entities and expelled 10 Russian officials for interfering in the presidential election, undermining capital security and oppressing Ukraine.

To counter the U.S., Russia has also announced that it will expel U.S. diplomats, including Bart Gorman, deputy U.S. ambassador to Moscow, and 10 staff members of the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, who were listed as “persona non grata”. Russia stressed that the U.S. had also taken hostile actions against some staff members of the Russian Embassy in Washington and the Russian Consulate General in New York, saying it was a reciprocal response, and that they must leave the country by May 21. Russia also said it will continue to take further countermeasures in the future in response to the illegal U.S. sanctions against Russia.
