Beginning Thursday, April 22, the Biden administration will convene a two-day “Climate Change” leadership video summit. Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping will also attend the summit. In response, former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo commented that the Chinese Communist Party will not fulfill any of the commitments it made at the summit.
Pompeo made the comments during an interview on “Fox Business Tonight” on Wednesday night, April 21. He said that from his past experience with the Chinese Communist Party, it will never honor any international commitments.
Pompeo said, “The Chinese Communist Party will never be willing to honor any of the commitments made at the (climate) summit, and we must continue to watch the actions of the Chinese Communist Party.”
Although Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping will be invited to the White House-hosted climate summit, the U.S. and China have reportedly not scheduled any bilateral talks.
Pompeo said, “I predict that the Chinese Communist Party will continue with the same old story, with a series of promises that they never intend to keep …… Over the years, they’ve broken more promises, including to President Obama, that they would not militarize the South China Sea.”
“We need to see real action,” Pompeo added. He argued that America’s security, its prosperity, depends on the U.S. government monitoring the Communist Party’s actual actions, rather than listening to its rhetoric at summits, “which is just slogans that it won’t actually carry out.”
He praised the former Trump (Trump) administration for “careful talk and bold action” in dealing with the Chinese Communist Party, and that “if we weren’t prepared to implement or make good on the threatening rhetoric [against the CCP], then we wouldn’t be saying that.”
He advised the Biden administration that to maintain the U.S. deterrent effect on the CCP, it must “walk the talk” with it. “If we make promises that we can’t keep, they (the Communist Party) will become unconcerned” and “appeasement only brings war, and power comes from deterrence.” He hopes the Biden administration makes it clear to all nations that U.S. leaders will deliver on what they say.
Pompeo hopes that the current administration will not subvert the Trump administration’s principle of “doing what you say you will do.
As a well-known hawk in the Trump administration, Pompeo is well versed in the ways of the Chinese Communist Party and its ambitions. In a recent interview, he also said the U.S. government needs to show resolve if it hopes to deter the CCP from invading Taiwan.
He said, “We’ve all heard Xi Jinping say that he wants to take back Taiwan, yet Taiwan has never been part of China ……” He argued that the United States should take seriously Indo-Pacific Command Commander Davidson’s warning that the Chinese Communist Party would attack Taiwan within six years and prepare for it.
