According to the website of Indian media Sunday Guardian post, China’s social credit system has now been extended to the Haidilao restaurant in Vancouver, Canada.
Ryan Pan, the manager of the Vancouver restaurant, confirmed to the media that more than 60 surveillance cameras have been installed inside the restaurant and two cameras at each of the 30 tables in the restaurant, as required by the company, and that this is part of China’s social credit system.
Manager Pan also said that the cameras were installed to discipline employees who do not do what the company requires, and that the video footage would all be sent back to China, but he refused to give a reason for doing so, adding that it was a secret.
The report also pointed out that the location of this Seabed is less than 10 minutes away from the Chinese consulate and the residence where Huawei’s chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou is currently under house arrest.
Some analysts have pointed out that this practice by Seabed is not only putting the privacy and safety of Chinese people who go to the restaurant at risk, including other Canadians who are similarly compromised. The report highlights that the original purpose of the social credit system is surveillance, which is now expanding globally.
