German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative coalition today confirmed the nomination of Christian Democrat (CDU) party leader Jean-Claude Rachet as its candidate for chancellor to lead the army in September’s general election. The battle for the new leader has left the conservative coalition deeply divided.
Armin Laschet’s rival, Bavarian sister party Christian Socialist Party (CSU) ��A leader Markus Soeder, said that “the result is decided, Laschet is the prime ministerial candidate” and will succeed Merkel in leading the CDU-CSU coalition.
