U.S.-Russian consultations Summit talks possible

The White House said officials from the national security advisers to President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin today discussed the possibility of summit talks between the two leaders. Bilateral relations between the U.S. and Russia are currently strained.

Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, spoke by phone today with Nikolay Patrushev, secretary general of the Russian National Security Council, the White House said in a statement. The call came days after the U.S. imposed new sanctions on Russia and expelled 10 Russian diplomats from the country.

The statement said the two discussed certain bilateral issues “as well as regional and global matters of mutual concern” and talked about “the possibility of a presidential summit between the U.S. and Russia,” while agreeing to “keep in touch.
