Iran and world powers resume talks on Iran nuclear deal in Vienna. Iranian negotiator says talks have made some progress.
Iran’s chief negotiator Abbas Araqchi told Iranian state media Saturday (April 17) that while progress has been made in the talks, there is still much work to be done before a final deal is reached.
“A new understanding seems to be emerging and there is common ground between the parties on the ultimate goal,” Araqchi said, “but the road ahead will not be smooth and there are some serious differences.”
Chinese negotiators said the other signatories to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal agreed to step up resolution of topics, including that the U.S. would lift sanctions on Iran and the actions Irang would have to take to revive the nuclear deal.
The EU said Saturday that negotiations in Vienna will include EU officials as well as representatives from Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and Iran.
Iran announced this week that it will increase the enrichment of uranium to 60 percent, three times what it has done in the past, putting further strain on reaching a deal.
Iran announced an accelerated uranium enrichment program after an attack on its Natanz nuclear facility last week. After talks resumed in Vienna, Iranian state-run television said Reza Karimi, 43, was a suspect in the attack on the Natanz nuclear facility and said Karimi fled Iran hours before the attack.
Iranian state-run television published a photo of a man named Karimi and said the man was born in the Iranian city of Kashan. The TV station said it was “taking the necessary measures through legal channels for his arrest and repatriation.”
