Fu Zuoyi suddenly found himself unable to fight

In 1948, the long-established and brave anti-Japanese general Fu Zuoyi, one day suddenly found himself unable to fight, whether planning, or marching, are in the hands of the other side. The opponent seems to be particularly good at calculating, can be his well-trained troops divided, surrounded, annihilated, so that he was everywhere passive, either to no avail, or fall into a trap. He was so baffled that he often slapped himself, banged his head against the wall, and tried to kill himself by biting the head of a match.

Later he learned that his battle plan, the movement of troops, troops equipped, the other side knows everything, as if his war room, placed in the yard of others, unobstructed, all by others to see clearly, clearly. This battle how to fight ah!

Later he learned that his favorite daughter, and his most talkative daughter, his most trusted daughter Fu Dongju, all his secrets, all the details transmitted to the other side. No wonder the opponent “use the army like a god”, and beat himself everywhere passive, in a difficult position.

It is also strange that during the civil war, many children of high ranking officials of the national government, who were well fed and clothed, were radicalized in their thinking while studying in school and went to the opposite camp of their fathers. Like Chen Lei’s youngest daughter, Chen Lian, Fu Zuoyi’s eldest girl, Fu Dongyu, is no different.

This Fu Dongju was born in 1924, is Fu Zuoyi’s eldest daughter. Mother Zhang Jinqiang is Fu Zuoyi’s first wife, with Fu Zuoyi stationed in Taiyuan, gave birth to Fu Dongyu. Fu Dongju grew up in Taiyuan, and in 1937, when the war broke out, she moved with her mother to Xi’an and then to Chongqing, where she enrolled in Nankai High School, which had been moved from Tianjin. 1942, when she was 18, she enrolled in the Southwest United University in Kunming, where she studied English. During her studies, she joined the Trumpet Club, a progressive youth organization in middle school, and then was absorbed as a member of the Democratic Youth League (DYL) at the university. These organizations would often carry out some activities, and once Fu Dongju attended a rally in Kunming, when the military police came to disperse the students, she broke her foot while running and squatted on the ground, unable to move. At that moment, a young man darted over and picked her up to hide in an alley.

This man was Zhou Yizhi, a journalism student at SWLU, a Vietnamese expatriate. In 1947, after graduating, Fu Dongju returned to the north and worked as an editor of Dagong Bao in Tianjin. On this day, Li Ding of the underground party informed Fu Dongju to write her autobiography and that someone would come to contact her with a newspaper in hand to formally fulfill the procedures of joining the party. At the appointed time, Fu Dongju was waiting in her room when someone knocked on the door outside, and when she opened it, it was Zhou Yizhi. This made Fu Dongju deeply feel that he came at a bad time, and was about to ask him to come back another day, but unexpectedly found Zhou Yizhi holding a newspaper with a contact code, and immediately jumped up with joy.

Fu Zuoyi has been in the dark about the true identity of his daughter and son-in-law. Chen Brei was even more innocent, until his death, he did not know that his daughter Chen Lian’s son-in-law Yuan Yongxi was a member of the Chinese Communist Party.

Fu Dongju and Zhou Yi later became lifelong partners. Fu Dongju’s task at that time was to use her special status as Fu Zuoyi’s daughter to collect Fu Zuoyi’s military intelligence and pass it on to the Chinese Communist Party through the “North China Suppression General” office located in Huangjia Garden in Tianjin, so that many of Fu Zuoyi’s military operations repeatedly suffered defeats. It was through the information she provided that the Chinese Communist Party learned of Fu Zuoyi’s troop deployment and strategic intentions, and properly seized the opportunity to make the Northeast Field Army enter the border ahead of schedule, trapping Fu Zuoyi and the troops he led in North China.

At the end of 1948, Fu Dongju was ordered by the underground party to come to her father’s side in Beiping. At that time, the two armies were in private contact, discussing peace talks. Fu Dongju’s task was to understand the relevant developments and report Fu Zuoyi’s every move in time. Throughout the peace talks, the Chinese Communist Party was using the information provided by Fu Dongju, always in control of the initiative of the peace talks. Fu Zuoyi agreed to the peace talks, and eventually the two sides reached a peace agreement.

Everything seemed to be smooth and smooth, and a peaceful handover was just around the corner. But at this point, the Chinese Communist Party, in a victorious gesture, drafted an “official letter from the Pingjin Front Command to General Fu Zuoyi”. The letter, which is like an ultimatum, is strongly worded and harsh, saying: “…… your military travels, slaughtering people, raping women, burning villages, plundering property, and doing everything …… under the rule of your general and your subordinates. Under the rule of your general and your subordinates, all the freedom rights of the people are abolished, all democratic parties and people’s groups are oppressed ……, innocent people are arrested in Beiping ……, your general is a war criminal …… That is, you should follow the instructions of this army at this last moment, in order to redeem yourself …….”

Fu Dongju see this official letter, astonished, she knows her father “can kill, not humiliate” character, if her father to show off a moment of anger, rage, ordered the withdrawal of the agreement, angry resistance, it will be a life and soul, jade and stone burning blood disaster, the ancient city will also be destroyed once. Fortunately, this letter is Deng Baoshan and the Chinese Communist Party representative Su Jing forwarded to her, she happened to see, while her father was not at this time, she had the opportunity to press the letter in Fu Zuoyi Zhongnanhai Juren Hall office under the file.

February 1, 1949, the day after the communist army held a ceremony to enter the city, the People’s Daily published the letter publicly, when Fu Dongju turned out the original letter to his father. After reading it, Fu Zuoyi was very angry and immediately scolded his daughter for being disloyal and unrighteous. Fu Dongju understand his father’s feelings at this time, he is not regret signing the peace agreement, but can not accept such a gesture, accusing, contempt for him and his troops, and should not be in the peace agreement has been achieved, with such a pompous attitude to insult him.

Previously, according to the terms of the agreement, more than 200,000 national troops in Beiping had already moved out of the city and driven to the designated place to accept the reorganization. The original proposal of Fu Zuoyi’s regiments, armies and divisions were not moved to the integration program, which was eventually not accepted, and the Chinese Communist Party implemented the reorganization program to break up and integrate Fu Zuoyi’s troops.

On January 29, 1949, the joint office in Beiping held a preparatory meeting. Preparatory meeting, the CPC representative Ye Jianying directly told Guo Zongfen, a representative of Fu Zuoyi’s side, that “this institution is a working organ under the command of the front command, not an organ of power.” And the name of the organization was re-established as “Beiping Joint Handover Office”. Adding the word “handover” qualifies its transitional nature in terms of form and content. At this point, Fu Zuoyi’s military and political machinations were dismantled.

In return, Mao Zedong said of Fu Zuoyi, “You are a great credit to Beijing and should be awarded a medal as big as the Temple of Heaven.” After the establishment of the government, Fu Zuoyi joined the government and, according to his own wishes, was appointed Minister of Water Resources (later the Ministry of Water Resources and Electricity).

In August 1949, she joined the Southwest Service Corps of the Second Field Army and participated in the founding of Yunnan Daily in Kunming. in March 1951, Fu was transferred to the People’s Daily in Beijing.

During the Cultural Revolution, Fu Dongju was singled out as a “class dissident” and was criticized. The reason was that when someone investigated Fu’s history, they found that the details of her joining the Party were unclear. So the foreign investigators found Fu Dongju herself and asked her who her introducer was. Fu Dongju said it was Li Ding.

At this time, Li Ding is being fought in the original unit, once heard the foreign investigators asked about this, thought of their own history problems have been enough, and then admitted to introduce the daughter of the warlord into the party, is not a crime on top of the crime. At once, he categorically denied it.

During that time, Fu Dongju was very painful, she did not understand how she betrayed her family betrayed her father and joined the party to join the revolution, how did it become a crime? And also mixed into the party class dissidents? Even her own motivation to avoid the official letter of the Chinese Communist Party to Fu Zuoyi brought negative stimulus, also became “withholding the highest instructions”, “against Chairman Mao” counter-revolutionary crime.

In this way, the internal investigation and external investigation more than back and forth, things are getting bigger and bigger, and finally Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai are alarmed. Until one day, Mao Zedong said to Fu Zuoyi on the Tiananmen Tower: “Your daughter’s Party membership is not a problem, you can rest assured.” Only then was Fu Dongju relieved.

“After the Cultural Revolution, Fu was transferred to the Hong Kong branch of Xinhua News Agency for 13 years, until she retired in 1995. After retiring, Fu Dongju lived with her children in the United States for two years. Since then, Fu mainly lives in a high-rise apartment in the front three gates of Beijing, with a view of downtown Beijing from the window.

In her later years, Fu Dongju lived a very poor life, and could even use words like embarrassment to describe it. Because she was suffering from many diseases and needed to be hospitalized, her small pension was not enough. Although she belongs to the central organ of the Secretary level retired cadres, medical expenses can be fully reimbursed, but she lives in a special needs ward, is to need extra care for ordinary patients to provide a ward, 400 yuan per day for accommodation; nursing costs also have to pay for themselves, two people 12-hour shifts, thousands of dollars per person per month, the cost is low people do not do. It was hard to find a few nursing staff, but they asked for 5,000 yuan per month, and two would cost 10,000 yuan, so how could they afford to pay?

Some years ago, the housing reform, the need for individuals to buy down the public housing, is such a symbolic not much money, she could not get out, so that the State Council Administration of Institutional Affairs repeatedly pressed her to force housing payments.

Originally, she could have been considered for admission to a high cadre ward, but she was not qualified enough, and only people of vice ministerial rank or above could be admitted to such wards. The hospital also knows that she is the famous Fu Dongju, but the rules are the rules, can not be broken, the hospital is also unable to help.

When she was not bedridden, she was often concerned about the Hope Project, and had contacted people from all walks of life for donations to build two Hope Schools in Shanxi Province. Many of her acquaintances during the Pingjin Campaign were later in high positions and were treated much better than her, but she was the only one who remained silent and uncontested, and only stayed at the bureau level.

In 2007, Fu Dongju died of illness at the age of 83.

Before she died, a reporter said to her: “General Fu Zuoyi’s life is well worth writing ……” She digressed and said: “The tea has been cold, do you want me to give you some hot water?”

After the peaceful “liberation” of Beiping, Fu Zuoyi knew that his daughter had long been a member of the underground, but also from his daughter’s mouth, learned that she used her brother to steal intelligence. Although Fu Zuoyi eventually chose to forgive his daughter, but after all, there is this hurdle between father and daughter. During the Cultural Revolution, Fu Dongju was seized as a “class dissident” and suffered a brutal struggle. Once, Fu Dongju visited her father with her son, Fu Zuoyi said after a long silence, “From now on, you do not come again.”

Father and daughter’s feelings can no longer return to the year, but also write what to write? The tea will get cold once people leave. ……
