Chinese-owned power plant workers demand pay raise, police shoot to suppress 5 dead

Workers at a Chittagong power plant under construction in southeastern Bangladesh launched a demonstration on Saturday (17) to demand a pay rise. The police claimed that a police officer was attacked and then opened fire to suppress it, resulting in at least five deaths and many injuries.

The power plant is being built by China’s Shandong Electric Power Construction Third Engineering Co Ltd, which signed an agreement with Bangladeshi major S Alam Group in 2016 to build the project at a cost of US$2.4 billion (HK$18.72 billion).
