Pompeo: If the United States does not show determination, Taiwan is in danger

Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Friday, April 16, that Xi Jinping wants to “reunify” Taiwan, even though it was never part of the Communist Party of China. If the U.S. government wants to deter the Chinese Communist Party from invading Taiwan, it needs to show resolve.

Pompeo made the remarks on Fox News’ “Morning With Maria” Friday morning. He also mentioned at the time that the U.S. government should demand fair and mutually beneficial trade relations with China and should go after the Chinese Communist Party over its virus problem.

Pompeo talked about how happy he was to learn that the U.S. and Japanese summits would meet, because the Chinese Communist Party’s invasion of Taiwan is a very real threat. But he stressed that the Biden administration needs to show its resolve if it wants to deter the Chinese Communist Party from attacking Taiwan.

We have all heard Xi Jinping say that he wants to take back Taiwan, yet Taiwan has never been part of the Chinese communist state,” he said. He (Xi) is committed to doing that, and he’s continuing to push that timetable. We are all aware of Philip Davidson’s (Commander, Indo-Pacific Command) comments on this, and we should all take his views seriously and be prepared for them.”

Davidson, the commander of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, had warned in February that the Chinese Communist Party would attack Taiwan within six years.

Pompeo also described various preparations made by the former Trump administration to prevent a Chinese Communist invasion of Taiwan, one of which was a joint response with allies through the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad). He said, “I’m very pleased to see that Biden will be meeting with Kan, who is a very good and dedicated Japanese man who also cares very much about Taiwan.”

Pompeo went on to say that the U.S. government should let the Chinese Communist Party know by letting them know that if they invade Taiwan, it poses a great threat to Japan as well. Therefore, the U.S. should help Taiwan by strengthening the U.S.-Japanese alliance and providing Taiwan with defense weapons systems. These are all methods we can use to deter the CCP, but if the U.S. does not show its resolve, the CCP will likely make moves that will put the people of Taiwan in crisis,” he said.”

Pompeo also urged the new U.S. administration to discuss the Taiwan Strait crisis publicly, not privately, and to inform the world of the CCP’s aims and the reasons behind them. He said, “When the former Trump administration clarifies this issue, it is a greater deterrent to the Chinese Communist Party.”

During the program, Pompeo suggested that the new U.S. administration do well to develop economic ties with Japan, which is currently too dependent on mainland China for trade. He suggested addressing Japan’s exports through allies in the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue and U.S. allies in the Asia-Pacific region.

He urged the Biden administration to use the opportunity to clearly inform the Chinese Communist Party, “We need fair and mutually beneficial trade, and we’re not going to kowtow to them just because we buy some small things from them.”

Trump’s presidency had a policy prohibiting Americans from investing in Chinese Communist Party companies, all of which have close ties to the Communist Party’s military. Pompeo believes the new U.S. administration should continue that policy.

There are two reasons for this, he explained. First, for years, Chinese Communist companies have enjoyed the most favorable treatment in the United States, but it has been very difficult for U.S. companies to enter the mainland market, so starting with the Trump administration, the United States has required at least Chinese Communist companies receiving investments in the United States to use U.S. channels to enter the U.S. capital market, so that these Chinese Communist companies must publish similar information as U.S. companies do when entering the mainland market.

Second, Pompeo urged every U.S. company that invests in Communist Chinese companies to consider the political risk of such investments because of the ongoing genocide in Xinjiang, China. He said, “When they talk about social justice, they have to consider everybody, and there’s a genocide going on in the western part of mainland China, and every (U.S.) company should seriously consider that.”

Pompeo concluded the program by addressing the issue of the source of the Chinese Communist virus. Host Bartholomew said she could not understand why Biden did not mention the source of the Chinese Communist Party virus during his call with Xi. Pompeo said he could not understand that either. In his view, it was a big mistake by Biden.

Pompeo said the CCP knew at the beginning of the outbreak that the virus could be passed from person to person, but withheld the information, “which is what dictatorial governments do.” Pompeo also noted that the Chinese Communist Party’s laboratory security was very poor. He said, “Those labs are very dangerous and the risk of another outbreak of this (pandemic) is very real.”

Pompeo believes the new U.S. administration should confront the Chinese Communist Party over the source of the virus and should hold it accountable. They can’t be allowed to duck the issue,” he said. So the fact that this administration is not confronting the Chinese Communist Party on this is a major problem.”
