Former Shanghai Mayor Yang Xiong recently died suddenly of a heart attack, and current Shanghai Party Secretary Li Qiang and Meng Jianzhu, former secretary of the Communist Party of China’s Political and Legal Committee, showed up at his funeral. Yang Xiong was considered to be a Jiang Zemin family horse, however, official information shows that no one from Jiang Zemin’s family was present, nor did they say anything.

On April 16, according to the land media “Shangguan News” news, Yang Xiong’s body farewell ceremony was held in Shanghai Longhua Funeral Hall that morning.

Official reports said that at 9 a.m. on the 16th, Li Qiang, Meng Jianzhu, Yan Junqi, Xu Kuangdi, Zhao Keshi, Lou Jiwei, Liu Xinhua, Gong Zheng, Jiang Zhuoqing, Dong Yunhu, Yu Shaoliang, Zheng Gangmiao, Liu Xuexin, Chen Yin, Weng Zuliang, Zhou Huilin, Zhuge Yujie, Zhu Zhisong and many other officials who have served or are currently serving in Shanghai showed up to say goodbye.

The report said that those who sent wreaths or condolences also included the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, the General Office of the Standing Committee of the CPC, the General Office of the CPC State Council, the General Office of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the Finance and Economy Committee of the CPC National People’s Congress, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and some provincial and municipal party committees and governments.

CCP Ambassador to the U.S. Cui Tiankai also paid a rare tribute in a letter on April 13.

In 2001, Yang Xiong became deputy secretary-general of the Shanghai Municipal Government, and two years later was elected deputy mayor. Since then, he has been partnered with Han Zheng, who is regarded as Jiang’s top horse.

However, there is no information that Jiang Zemin’s family has said anything about Yang Xiong’s death.

The presence of Meng Jianzhu, former secretary of the Political and Legal Committee, at Yang Xiong’s funeral is a cause for concern. Meng, who also served as Shanghai’s mayor, has been rumored to be in a bad way in recent years as he has been dogged by scandals and a number of his former ministers have fallen from grace.

On the evening of September 30 last year, the State Council held its usual “Eleventh Day” reception in Beijing, and Meng Jianzhu, who had not been seen for a long time and had been repeatedly rumored to be in a negative light, showed up, which seemed to be an official intention to dispel the rumors. The funeral of Yang Xiong is the second time that Meng Jianzhu has appeared in public.

Yang Xiong reportedly died of a heart attack in the early hours of April 12 at Huashan Hospital in Shanghai at the age of 68. Officials did not mention the details of Yang Xiong’s sudden death. However, sources said Yang Xiong’s sudden death was related to forgetting his red card, which represents the medical privileges of retired senior officials.

Current affairs commentator Zhao Pei said in a video program that the sudden death of Yang Xiong gave Xi Jinping a big gift just as he was cleaning up the financial power of the Jiang family. Yang Xiong was originally the mayor of Shanghai, where he was left by Jiang Zemin to look after his family. In 2017, Yang Xiong resigned as mayor of Shanghai to serve as deputy chairman of the National People’s Congress, which is actually his retirement.
