Vows to host safe Olympics, Kan: Biden also supports

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga vowed today to host a “safe and secure” Olympics this year, saying U.S. President Joe Biden has also voiced support for the cause.

In a joint White House press conference with Biden during his visit to the United States this week, Suga said “Japan is listening and learning from the advice of the World Health Organization (WHO) and experts” and that Japan is making “the best possible” preparations for the Tokyo Olympics.

Kan told Biden today that Japan will do everything it can to contain the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak.

They are doing everything they can to contain the infection and achieve a safe and reassuring competition from a scientific and objective point of view,” Suga said.

He added: “I showed my determination to host the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics this summer, to make this Olympics a symbol of global solidarity, and President Biden has once again shown his support for this.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which was supposed to be held last year, is expected to open in July after being delayed by one year due to the spread of the epidemic.

The recent increase in the number of infected cases in Japan has made it increasingly uncertain whether the Olympics will be held as scheduled. Although Kan has promised to hold a safe Eastern Olympics, preparations have been complicated by the epidemic crisis.

The East Olympic Organizing Committee today announced the cancellation of another section of the Tokyo Olympic torch relay route, the third section of the flame relay route to be cancelled due to the epidemic. In addition, the BMX Freestyle test event scheduled for April 24 and 25 has also been postponed.
