The verdict on the “8.18 rally” of 9 pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong is released.

Nine pro-democracy activists, including the founder of One Media Group, Lai Chi-ying, former Democratic Party Chairman Lee Chu-ming and Albert Ho, were charged with organizing and participating in the “illegal assembly” case of the “anti-Sino” rally on August 18 of the previous year. The Hong Kong court announced the verdict, Lai Chi-ying and Lee Cheuk-yan were sentenced to 12 months in prison. Leung Kwok Hung was sentenced to 18 months in prison, the heaviest sentence.

The West Kowloon Magistrates’ Court judge announced the sentencing results, saying that even though the 818 rally did not involve violence, after considering the seriousness of the case, it was determined that a social service order was not appropriate and “sentencing is the only option.

The results of the 7 people who pleaded guilty today are as follows: He Xiulan was sentenced to 8 months; Li Zhuming was sentenced to 11 months and suspended for 24 months; Lai Chi-ying and Lee Cheuk-yan were sentenced to 12 months; Albert Ho and Wu Yiyi were sentenced to 12 months and suspended for 24 months; and Leung Kwok-hung was sentenced to 18 months in prison, the heaviest of the 7 people.

The two men who had previously pleaded guilty were sentenced to 10 months in prison for Au Nok Hin and 8 months in prison for Leung Yiu-chung, with 12 months suspended.

The case sparked great interest in Hong Kong and internationally. A large number of people gathered outside the court to show their solidarity, and the staff of foreign consulates in Hong Kong, Cardinal Emeritus Joseph ZEN, and many lawyers were present to observe the trial.

The “anti-China” movement in Hong Kong has been going on for nearly a year since the spring of 2019, with large public rallies reaching up to 2 million people, including the 1.7 million people who participated in the 818 rally, and an outpouring of public opinion demanding that the Hong Kong government respond to five demands, including the anti-sending of China.
