The sudden death of former Shanghai mayor Yang Xiong, whose culpability cannot be shirked

Yang Xiong, a former deputy secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Shanghai Municipal Committee and former mayor of Shanghai, died of a heart attack at the age of 68 at Huashan Hospital in Shanghai on April 12, according to an April 12 report in the Communist Party’s official media.

According to public information, Yang Xiong, born in November 1953, is a native of Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. in February 2001, he was the deputy secretary-general of the Shanghai Municipal Government; after February 2003, he was the deputy mayor of the Shanghai Municipal Government, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC and the executive deputy mayor; after December 2012, he was the deputy secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee and mayor; after February 2017, he held idle positions in the CPC National People’s Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

Yang Xiong is alleged to be a close associate of Jiang Zemin’s eldest son, Jiang Mianheng, the former Communist Party leader. Yang Xiong was under Jiang Zemin’s command when he was secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee.
