Variant virus accounts for 80% of new cases in Japan’s Kansai in May fears full replacement

Japan’s recent Wuhan pneumonia (novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19) epidemic is heating up again, with 4,312 new people diagnosed yesterday (14), of which Osaka, located in the Kansai region, is even more serious. Japan’s National Institute of Infectious Diseases recently released a survey, said the Kansai region, the British variant of the virus strain has accounted for about 80% of the new cases, is expected to replace the original strain of the virus in May!

According to the Japanese media “Japan Broadcasting Association” (NHK) reported on the 15th, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases pointed out that the variant virus is believed to be one of the factors causing the re-emergence of the epidemic in Japan, although there are currently British, Brazilian and South African variant strains of the virus, but most of the spread in the Kansai region is the British variant virus. Therefore, the research institute is studying the British “N501Y” variant of the virus that is currently “mainstream” in the Kansai region, including Osaka Prefecture, Hyogo Prefecture and Kyoto Prefecture.

The Institute found that the British N501Y variant of the virus broke out in Japan in February this year, and in March, 50% of new cases in the Kansai region had been diagnosed with the variant, reaching 80% as of the 13th of this month, and it is expected that by mid-May, the traditional strain of the new coronavirus will be replaced by the N501Y variant.

NHK pointed out that Japan yesterday a single day 4312 new cases confirmed, 34 cases of death. Among them, Osaka Prefecture continues to confirm more than 1,000 cases, 1130 new cases yesterday; Hyogo Prefecture also confirmed more than 500 cases for the first time yesterday, 507 new cases. In addition, in the Kanto region, Tokyo added 591 confirmed cases yesterday, the highest number of confirmed cases in a single day since the second emergency declaration was lifted, and the number of confirmed cases has exceeded 500 for two consecutive days.

In response, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases said that the proportion of people infected with the variant virus in the Kanto region, including Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama prefectures, was about 10% at the beginning of April, and if the number of confirmed cases continues to rise, it is likely to reach 80% or even 90% by early May.
