According to China Watch, Dr. Yuan Zhong, president and editor-in-chief of China Union Medical College Press, delivered a keynote speech on “Being a Culturally Competent Physician” at the International Clinical Department Management Conference, which was thought-provoking, The audience of more than 300 people was silent.
He pointed out the problems of the Chinese healthcare system at present and pointed them out in a nutshell.
He pointed out that if there is no love in healthcare, it is called trading. A person goes to a doctor, tells you all his privacy, strips naked and lets you examine him; tells you all the pain and gives you his life. Such people are not ordinary people. Because of love there is medical care, if this spirit is extinguished it is no longer called medical care is called trading, it can not have dignity.
He also pointed out that when CCTV is broadcasting false advertisements such as “Cordyceps with food” and “Life One”, it means that the whole river has been polluted, and no fish can get rid of the pollution, and the way to cure the pollution is to cure the upstream.
“I am often asked by students what is the use of humanistic medicine. I want to say it on two levels: the first level is values; the second level is humanistic wisdom. Values are the way, and humanistic wisdom is the art.”
If you only want to make money, don’t become a doctor
First of all, he mentioned the issue of “Tao”. I have heard some deans say in their summing-up meetings, “In the past year, through the unremitting efforts of the entire hospital staff, our hospital’s inpatients increased by 20%, outpatients increased by 30%, and revenue increased by 10%.” So is there something wrong with these words? Probably the directors and doctors here would think that this is a natural thing to do. In fact, this should not be the words of a dean, this should be the words of an entrepreneur. What should the dean say? What the dean should say is “How many people we have cured, how many people we have helped.”
Dr. Yuan said, “We’ve forgotten what a hospital is, it’s a problem with values. I’ve also had doctors tell me that they became doctors just to make money. That in itself is true, but I want to tell you that if you only want to make money, don’t become a doctor.”
He mentioned that there are many more profitable jobs in this society than being a doctor, selling houses, mining, finance, IT …… but there are only two professions that are rich and dignified, doctors and teachers. In Japan, there are only two professions that can be called “sir”, and they are also doctors and teachers.
Doctors need to look after patients, not their pockets.
He mentioned something that a Uyghur, the director of research at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, told him: In the Uyghurs, they believe that people can ascend to heaven when they die; but not everyone can ascend to heaven. It has to be discussed collectively, and corrupt officials, bad policemen and bad city managers are all sent to hell. But there are only two professions that can ascend to heaven collectively without discussion: that is, doctors and teachers.
He pointed out: What do you mean by dignity? Being a doctor myself, if a doctor looks into the pockets of his patients instead of looking at them properly, the patients will hate you. There are two things that are important in Christianity: one is the concept of sanctity, and the other is the spirit of fraternity. The concept of holiness tells us that doctors are a group of good people.
President Yuan also mentioned that the chairman of BJU, Li Bijing, is a Jew, and she once told herself why Jews seem to be more intelligent and successful people than others. In fact, it is because Jews have the concept of holiness. Jews believe they are God’s people, so they work harder and more diligently than others, and are more likely to succeed.
A good doctor should be recognized not only for his skills but also for his character.
He also mentioned that there have been many problems in society over the years, such as the poisoning and killing of a fellow student in the dormitory by a medical student at Fudan University in Shanghai. He said, “I am an ’empty man’, no values.” He should really reflect on this. Another doctor told him that when the doctor was about to leave work on his first day in the gastroenterology department, a farmer with cardiovascular disease came to him because he had the wrong number. But he had no patients that day, so he gave the farmer a prescription against his conscience. When the patient came back to ask him about the medicine, he felt sorry for him and told the farmer to get a cardiovascular number again. The farmer suddenly cried, “I’ve run out of money”. The doctor later said: he had a feeling of sitting on the table and said goodbye to the doctor profession from then on.
Professor Yuan suggested: hospital cadres in the formulation of policies, must not let doctors to sacrifice goodness in order to obtain legitimate rights. For example, he should have 10,000 yuan of salary but only give him 2,000, the other 8,000 yuan for him to earn their own, which is evil.
What do you mean by medical care? Medical care originates from a sense of compassion, and people are valuable in having compassion. People help people because they see them suffering, and this is called medical care. What do you mean by hospital? In the Middle Ages, the Christian society had many wandering beggars and poor people. That’s why they set up a place for them to relieve their suffering, and finally slowly formed a hospital. If this essential spirit is extinguished, it is no longer called medical care, it is called trading, and it is impossible to have dignity.
If you treat a hospital as a business, what leaders like to say in meetings is “Our hospital has 500 million, our hospital has 800 million. ……” I think this is what medical humanities is all about, shaping the values of doctors. Why did Lang Jinghe, the director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Concordia, tell their medical staff to read a book outside of their specialty every week, just to expand their knowledge. Our doctors should learn to deal with people; we can’t just deal with disease.”
Be a good person for your children
Dr. Yuan concluded with a few points: first, he didn’t want to preach about how people should learn from Lei Feng, but they must think about what kind of doctor they will fall into when they are old. He told the old specialist, “You first be a good doctor so that your students can be good doctors, and when you are old, this old doctor will take care of you, and if you don’t be a good doctor now, when you are old your students will clean you up the way you did.”
Second, be a good person for your children. He said, “There are many things that Chinese people will only do and change for the sake of their children. I often talk about quitting smoking, and if we follow the example of foreigners who print skulls and black lungs on their cigarette packs, but many people won’t quit at all. Under what circumstances would we quit smoking? Just write on the cigarette packet, ‘Smoking will make your grandchildren deformed,’ and I think he will definitely quit.”
Third, he proposed the meaning of life: what do people do in this life to come? If you have a chance to go to the desert in Xinjiang, if there is a pool of water, there must be grass. There is grass, there are cattle and sheep, there are cattle and sheep, there are people …… grass value is to let cattle and sheep live well; cattle and sheep value is to let people live well; the value is to let other creatures live well …… this society because there are you more a beautiful, never let this society because There is me and more pain.
