Denmark has become the first country in the world to completely stop using AstraZeneca’s New Crown vaccine, following news that the vaccine may be linked to very rare cases of blood clots, according to Reuters news agency.
The decision will delay Denmark’s scheduled completion of the vaccination on July 25 until early August.
The Danish health agency said in a statement that the findings on blood clots “show real and serious side effects.
The EU drug regulator said last week that it had found a possible link between the AstraZeneca vaccine and cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST), but said the risk of dying from COVID-19 was “much greater” than the risk of dying from the rare side effect.
As of April 4, 169 cases of CVST had been reported to the European Medicines Agency, after 34 million doses of AstraZeneca had been administered in Europe.
Canada announced on April 13 the discovery of the first case of blood clots following AstraZeneca vaccination.
