Canada’s Immigration Minister Jean-Marie Mandichenloo announced Wednesday (14) that Canada is opening up a conditional pathway to permanent residency for 90,000 foreign essential workers and graduate students who are currently in the country to combat the New Coronavirus outbreak and restore social and economic order.
The government will begin accepting applications for permanent residency from up to 50,000 foreign workers in the medical and other essential trades and 40,000 foreign nationals who have graduated from Canadian academic institutions on May 6. Applicants for medical and essential workers must have worked in Canada for at least one year, and international graduates must have completed a Canadian post-secondary program within the past four years.
Mandichenloo said that other essential jobs are often labeled as low-skilled jobs, but they are essential to building a society, and he hopes that through the new immigration program, the nation can regain a sense of the value of workers in related jobs. He believes the program can help the government achieve its goal of absorbing 401,000 new immigrants this year.
