China launches “Future Cotton” program in an attempt to set Chinese standards

According to reports, China’s cotton industry has previously launched the “Future Cotton” program, trying to create a Chinese version of the “Good Cotton Development Association” to develop China’s own cotton industry standards; the recent outbreak of the Xinjiang cotton boycott storm, has accelerated the development of this program The recent boycott of Xinjiang cotton has accelerated the pace of development of this plan.

The English-language South China Morning Post reported on Sunday that China’s cotton industry is stepping up its efforts to develop its own industry standard for cotton, which it has named the “Future Cotton” program, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The report said Beijing-based cotton vertical service provider Zhongnong Guoji Technology Development Co. Zhao Yan, the program’s coordinator, said the program only made significant progress in January after the China Fashion Designers Association and the Modern Seed Industry Development Fund joined.

We have followed Swiss standards for many years, but the country does not produce cotton, and now it is time to develop our national standards,” Zhao Yan said.

Zhao Yan, who will soon be the chief brand leader of the “Future Cotton” program, said that recent international hostility toward cotton in Xinjiang has somewhat accelerated the program’s progress, and believes that the “Future Cotton” program is expected to be a “critical moment” to showcase the “national” cotton industry. critical moment” to demonstrate “national aspirations”.

Zhao Yan also said that it is possible for CNA Guoji to set up a “future cotton” company to handle day-to-day affairs and organize industry events, and that preparations were already underway before the project was launched.

The report also quoted Luo Yan, secretary general of the Xinjiang Digital Cotton Research Center, who was involved in the initial preparations for “Future Cotton” and helped recruit new members in Xinjiang, as saying, “We hope to improve the overall quality of cotton in Xinjiang through this brand, because the quality of cotton in Xinjiang is not as good as that in the United States and Australia. “

Luo Yan also said that the “future of cotton” has hired 32 members in Xinjiang, and recruited a number of Chinese domestic fashion brands. At the same time, the “future of cotton” will give priority to recruiting Chinese brands, and then consider whether to recruit international brands.

The China Media Observer reported tonight that CNA Guoji said the company is indeed working on a “Future Cotton” project to establish China’s own industry standards for cotton, but it is unclear whether a separate “Future Cotton” company will be established.

According to the report, CNA Guoji is an innovative technology company with “leading digital cotton underlying technology and in-depth application scenarios”, and is China’s first cotton industry network enterprise and industry chain financial solution provider, as well as the only operator of the Cotton Industry Network Service System (CCVS) in China.

The report also pointed out that, approved by the Chinese State Council, the 12th China International Cotton Conference is scheduled to be held in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province from June 17 to 18. The theme of this year’s conference is “Building an open, inclusive and sustainable world cotton industry,” and industry organizations and relevant domestic and international institutions will be invited to attend.

Based in Switzerland, the Good Cotton Institute (BCI) is the world’s largest cotton industry standard organization, with more than 2,000 members worldwide as of December last year, including well-known brands such as Nike, Adidas and H&M.

China’s recent boycott has erupted after BCI issued a press release last October accusing Xinjiang of “forced labor” and other “human rights violations” and suspending certification of good cotton in the region. According to reports, the press release has been removed from BCI’s website, but no explanation has been provided.
