Afghanistan has always been one of the headaches of the United States, the former U.S. President Donald Trump (Donald Trump) had previously made a decision to withdraw U.S. troops in Afghanistan before May 1 this year, but the current President Joe Biden (Joe Biden) that Trump set a deadline for the withdrawal of troops difficult to achieve. And a U.S. official revealed that Biden plans to evacuate the remaining 2,500 U.S. troops from Afghanistan by September 11 this year, Biden’s decision, also tantamount to announcing the end of the longest war in U.S. history!
According to Reuters, Biden administration officials said the withdrawal will begin by May 1 and be completed by Sept. 11, and will focus on supporting the ongoing peace plan. However, Biden’s decision to withdraw suggests that U.S. military forces are no longer effective in achieving long-term peace in Afghanistan. Sources said Secretary of State John Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin are expected to discuss the decision to withdraw troops with NATO allies on Wednesday.
The Times also reported that British troops will be withdrawn along with U.S. forces, as the 750 British soldiers currently in Afghanistan are dependent on U.S. bases and facilities, and if U.S. forces withdraw from Afghanistan, British forces will also have to withdraw. British troops are assisting the Afghan government in training Afghan soldiers at the training base, and affected by future withdrawal activities, the UK has now made plans to hand over control of the British training base in Kabul to Afghan authorities.
