The outbreak of Wuhan pneumonia (novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19) in Osaka Prefecture, Japan, is heating up rapidly, with more than 1,000 cases confirmed daily for the first time yesterday and a new record of 1,130 cases confirmed today. The number of seriously ill patients in Osaka Prefecture has already exceeded the number of beds available in hospitals, and the Osaka healthcare system is facing collapse.
The NHK reports that the number of confirmed cases in Osaka has reached a record high of 1,130 today, the second day in a row that the number of confirmed cases has exceeded 1,000 in a single day. The total number of confirmed cases in Osaka is now 63,176, with 1,234 deaths. Osaka governor Yofumi Yoshimura said that if the outbreak cannot be stopped next week, he will call on the central government to issue a declaration of emergency.
According to reports, the number of seriously ill patients in Osaka, where the epidemic is spreading rapidly, now exceeds the number of serious hospital beds, and the Osaka healthcare system is facing a serious crisis.
As of today, the number of seriously ill patients in Osaka Prefecture is 233, an increase of 2.5 times over the past 2 weeks, while the number of beds available for immediate admission of seriously ill patients is currently 227, which is 6 beds less than the number of seriously ill patients, and the number of seriously ill patients will continue to increase in the future. Currently, 213 of the 233 critically ill patients are being treated in the intensive care ward, while the remaining 20 are still being treated in the light and moderate wards and have not yet been transferred.
The number of seriously ill patients is increasing and the medical system is in a very difficult situation,” said Yoshimura. The Osaka prefecture is currently working on a response, such as transferring less urgent surgeries to other hospitals and trying to get more beds in local hospitals.
