The Chinese Communist Party intends to speed up the construction of a new Yalu River bridge in Dandong City, Liaoning Province, connecting to Sinuiju City in North Korea.
Reports indicate that the Dandong authorities have recently launched a feasibility study for the construction of a new border crossing on the Chinese side of the new bridge; last month, the Liaoning provincial transport department also invited tenders for a six-month safety inspection contract. The Liaoning provincial government said the bridge will be opened to traffic soon.
The full name of the highway bridge over the Yalu River, which has eight lanes of two-way traffic, will replace the Sino-DPRK Friendship Bridge built in 1943, which had only one railroad and one one-way traffic road. The new bridge construction plan was launched 10 years ago and was scheduled to be completed in 2014, but it is seriously delayed, neither side has explained the reason, but outsiders believe it is the North Korean side’s problem.
