As students plan for the new school year after summer break, more and more universities are mandating that they complete the New Guinea virus vaccination before returning to campus this fall; however, CNBC News reports that parents are still generally skeptical about the vaccine.
In the past few days, Duke University, Brown University, Northeastern University, the University of Notre Dame and Syracuse University have been sending out vaccinations. The University of Notre Dame and Syracuse University have announced that students will be required to complete vaccinations before the first day of school when school begins this fall.
Cornell University and Rutgers University have previously announced that they will require students to be fully vaccinated at the start of the fall 2021 class. The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AACU) President Lynn Pasquerella said that more and more universities are expected to join the comprehensive student vaccination requirement.
The Associated Press reports that whether students should be required to be vaccinated at the start of the new semester this fall, and whether schools have the legal right to mandate vaccinations for students? Opinions vary among universities.
Cornell University, Brown University and others hope that vaccination will allow the campus to achieve the goal of herd immunity, so that classroom and dormitory vaccination rules can be loosened.
Cornell University President Martha Pollack and Provost Michael Kotlikoff said in a statement that the university is willing to accommodate students who cannot be vaccinated due to health factors or religious beliefs, but the current plan is that the majority of people who have completed vaccination will be on campus and in classrooms this fall, so that the transmission of the virus can be significantly reduced. The report states that some schools are putting the vaccine in place.
Some schools leave the decision of whether or not to vaccinate to the students, and some people believe that schools do not have the legal authority to force students to receive the new vaccine. The school has no authority to force students to get vaccinated.
