Knoxville, Tennessee (Knoxville) a high school shooting on the 12th, several people were shot, including a police officer, and one person is known to be dead. Police arrested one person.
The incident occurred at 3:15 p.m. at Austin-East MagnetSchool on Knoxville’s east side. Police officials said on Facebook, “Knox City Police Department officers responded to the scene after receiving a report of a male suspect possibly armed at the school.”
“As soon as the officers approached the suspect, a gun battle broke out. One Knox City Police Department officer was shot at least once and was taken to (University of Tennessee) Medical Center for treatment of injuries that are not expected to be life-threatening. One man was pronounced dead at the scene, and another was arrested and will be further investigated.”
Police initially reported that “multiple people were shot.” The Knoxville Police Department tweeted, “Multiple shots were reported, investigation is ongoing, please avoid the area of the incident.”
Investigators have not released the identities of the suspects or the deceased, saying only that they were all male. It is unclear if they were students at East Austin Magnet School.
The Knoxville high school community has seen several incidents of gun violence in the past few months, and East Austin has lost at least three students this year.
WBIR-TV News reported that the school had a few days of remote learning in February to allow students to mourn the loss of two 15-year-old students and a 16-year-old student who died at gunpoint.
Since mid-March, there has been a spate of shootings across the United States. A Texas cabinet factory was arrested last week after an employee opened fire, killing one and injuring six.
The March 16 shooting at several Atlanta, Georgia area massage parlors killed eight people, six of whom are believed to be Asian women. Ten people were shot and killed at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado, on March 22. A shooting at a real estate office in Orange, Southern California, killed four people, including a 9-year-old boy, on March 31.
