The recent drought in eastern Guangdong has caused the water level of several reservoirs in eastern Guangdong to drop, with some of them showing the bottom of the reservoirs and facing drying up. Many villages and towns in Chaoyang District, Shantou City, have recently been notified by the water company to stop supplying water for three days from April 7 to 10.
According to mainland media reports, since October last year, Guangdong has been experiencing low rainfall and severe drought in local areas. The drought in the Chaoshan region has developed into a severe drought and a local special drought.
Some villagers in Tong Yu Township, Chaoyang District, Shantou City, said the water supply in Tong Yu Township was suspended for three days from April 7 to 10, according to a notice from the local water company. The same group of areas where the water supply was stopped also included Chengtian, Longtian, Jingdu, Simapu and many other towns (villages). The villager pointed out that the water company has recently repeatedly arranged for “staggered water supply” according to the water supply for 3 days and 3 days.
The villager said that last year, the most severe time, there was no water for five consecutive days. Their family of seven, daily life consumes a huge amount of water, in order to adapt to the lack of water, she often get up in the middle of the night to pump water, will be able to hold water containers are stored full.
Under the drought, the water level of several reservoirs in eastern Guangdong continues to fall, some reservoirs are exposed to the bottom of the reservoir and face drying up, and the tap water supply in many places in eastern Guangdong, which depends on reservoir water, is facing challenges. Under the drought, water storage, buy water, queuing for water, become a typical picture of the serious situation of water supply.
In addition to Shantou, the past period of time, Jieyang City, Jie Dong District, where Mr. Chen also suffered from water shortages in the Bi Gui Yuan district, he recalled that in the past year, the district of small and large water outages dozens of times. He said, because of the location of the district, in addition to the lack of water to endure the regulation period, often during the water supply residents of the district can not use water.
Shantou, Jieyang and other areas in eastern Guangdong, although close to a number of rivers, but due to serious pollution in recent years, many places rely heavily on the supply of drinking water distributed in four reservoirs. However, since the second half of last year, under the influence of persistent drought, in addition to the reduction of river water, more serious is that the surrounding reservoir capacity of a number of emergency.
Jie Dong District, for example, the entire region’s tap water is mainly supplied by the Jie Dong Water Plant, water from the jurisdiction of the Wengnei, Shuihao, Shuangkeng, Savage Head Hill and other reservoirs. However, the current water level of several reservoirs has dropped significantly, and even some reservoirs have faced depletion.
Wengnei reservoir’s total capacity of more than 9 million cubic meters, the remaining water is less than a quarter of the current amount, only more than 2.6 million cubic meters; located in the upstream of the Wengnei reservoir of Shuangkeng reservoir, there are more than 1 million cubic meters left, accounting for only one-eighth of the total capacity; Savantoushan reservoir bottomed out, as a backup to the effective water volume of the Shide Hall reservoir is basically depleted, close to the dead capacity.
“Or the first time to encounter such a serious drought, the entire Jieyang are facing water shortages.” Wengnei reservoir management in charge of Chen Meibiao told the land media, Jiedong reservoir daily supply of about 110,000 cubic meters, originally Wengnei reservoir needs to supply more than 40,000 cubic meters per day to the water plant, but due to the continued drought, the reservoir limits the water supply, only about 30,000 cubic meters per day to the water plant. “Together with the water howling reservoir supplying about 10,000 cubic meters per day, the local reservoir in Jie Dong can only supply more than 40,000 cubic meters per day to the water plant at present, and any remaining shortfall needs to be diverted from other places.”
“If it continues not to rain, the local reservoir storage capacity can last at most a month.” Chen Meibiao said.
Shantou several water storage capacity is also very unpromising. For example, the existing storage capacity of Qiufeng Reservoir, located in Chaonan District and with a storage capacity of nearly 30 million cubic meters, is only more than 7 million cubic meters, accounting for only a quarter of the storage capacity. Longxi reservoir water level has also dropped significantly, surrounded by bare terracotta, revealing the reef at the bottom of the reservoir.
Relevant data show that as of 8:00 on April 1, Chaonan District’s 10 district-controlled reservoirs had about 15,273,700 square meters of water storage, accounting for only 9.2% of normal storage. However, with the ongoing drought, this figure continues to decline.
