Iranian President Rouhani inspects the progress of Iran’s nuclear energy industry in Tehran on April 10.
Iran launched advanced centrifuges to refine enriched uranium. The Iranian government also reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to nuclear non-proliferation.
Iranian President Rouhani ordered the injection of uranium gas into nearly two hundred advanced centrifuges and the start of tests with other equipment at the underground nuclear plant in Natanz on Saturday during a televised commemoration of National Nuclear Technology Day.
At the event, Rouhani said, “I emphasize once again that all our nuclear activities are peaceful and for non-military purposes.” The event announced more than 130 advances Iran has made in the nuclear industry over the past year, the latter as long as it is in the fields of medicine, energy and agriculture.
Iran’s actions may once again be a violation of the Iran nuclear deal reached in 2015.
The U.S. and Iran agreed to a second round of non-direct talks in Vienna next week to try to bring the two sides back into compliance with the Iran nuclear deal. But Iran insists that all U.S. sanctions on Iran must be lifted. The U.S. warned that demand could lead to a stalemate in the talks.
A senior State Department official told reporters Friday that U.S. Iranian diplomats held a first round of meetings in Vienna earlier in the day and resumed non-direct talks the following week. The talks began Tuesday after Iranian representatives held talks with representatives of Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia. Representatives of the latter five countries also met separately with the U.S. delegation nearby.
The U.S. official said the week’s transactional talks were productive and constructive.
