A few days ago, NASA released a photo of a Martian “rainbow” taken by the “Trail” Mars rover, which sparked a lot of discussion among netizens. Now, NASA has released a rare photo of Mars again.
According to foreign media reports, a few days ago, NASA to celebrate the “Mars Odyssey” (Mars Odyssey) probe successfully launched 20 years, released a rare photo of Mars taken by the probe.
According to NASA, the photo was taken by the Mars Odyssey rover’s thermal imager between December 2002 and November 2004. The location of the photo is at the north pole of Mars, at latitude 80.3 degrees north and longitude 172.1 degrees east, showing an area of 19 miles (about 31 kilometers).
Of course, since the thermal imager photo does not have color, the photo is not the original look taken by the rover, but was synthesized by NASA from a set of photos.
Through algorithms, the colors in the photos show the different temperatures of Mars. The photo shows the higher temperature of the dunes and is given yellow and orange tones, while the cooler areas are blue tones.
However, a number of users said that the photo is so beautiful that it looks exactly the same as the beach on Earth.
It is understood that the “Mars Odyssey” rover is a rover reserved for NASA’s “Mars Surveyor 2001 Program”. The program initially consisted of 2 missions to launch the orbiter and lander respectively, NASA later canceled the 2001 Mars landing mission, only retaining the orbiter mission.
The mission objectives were to conduct detailed mineralogical surveys and studies of the Martian surface to obtain data on Martian climate and geological characteristics; to probe the Martian surface radioactive environment and study the Martian radiation environment that could pose a potential threat to astronauts; and to provide relay services for subsequent Martian exploration missions.
