Recently, the Chinese Communist Party has not only sent aircraft carriers to Taiwan for naval exercises, but Chinese military aircraft have been intruding on Taiwan’s air defense identification zone almost daily. The White House said Friday (April 9) that the U.S. will closely monitor the increased Chinese Communist Party military activity in the Taiwan Strait and said Beijing’s recent actions could destabilize the region.

Asked if the U.S. government was concerned about a possible Chinese Communist Party invasion of Taiwan, she said, “We are seeing an increase in Chinese (Communist Party) military activity in the Taiwan Strait, which we believe has the potential to be destabilizing.”
In the past few months, the Chinese Communist Air Force has sent military aircraft, including fighter jets, to frequently violate Taiwan’s southwest air defense identification zone. For seven consecutive days since April 3, the Chinese Communist Party has sent military aircraft to disturb Taiwan. On Friday, the Taiwan Air Force released a news release saying that 11 Chinese military aircraft violated Taiwan’s southwest air defense identification zone (ADIZ), including four J-10s, four J-16s, an Air Marshal 500, a Carrier 8 and a Carrier 8 anti-submarine aircraft. Taiwan’s Air Force dispatched air patrol troops to respond, broadcast dispersal, and air defense missile tracking and monitoring.
The Chinese Liaoning ship departed from Miyako Strait in southwestern Japan on Saturday, conducting so-called “regular exercises” near Taiwan. Chinese Navy spokesman Patrick Gao said the Liaoning fleet’s training in the waters around Taiwan was “routine training organized according to the annual work plan” and that the Chinese Navy would continue to organize similar exercises and training activities on a “regular basis” as planned.
The U.S. destroyer USS John McCain passed through the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, the State Department warned of increasingly aggressive moves by the Chinese Communist Party toward the Philippines and Taiwan, emphasizing the U.S. obligations to its partners. State Department spokesman Ned Price expressed “concern” about the Chinese Communist Party’s intimidation campaign against Taiwan, saying the U.S. commitment to Taiwan is rock-solid.
Under U.S. law, the United States must provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself. Price cited the Taiwan Relations Act, which obligates the United States to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself against the Chinese Communist Party.
“Under long-standing U.S. policy, as reflected in the Taiwan Relations Act, the United States retains the ability to resist any force or other coercive action that could endanger the security of the people, society, or economic system of Taiwan.” He said.
