Guangdong Taishan nuclear power plant accidental release of gas, officials say no harm

China’s Guangdong Provincial Nuclear Emergency Commission Office informed Hong Kong of an operational incident concerning the release of a very small amount of gas from the Taishan nuclear power plant, and said the incident had no impact on the environment, the Central News Agency quoted Hong Kong’s Security Bureau as saying Thursday.

According to radiation monitoring results from the Hong Kong Observatory, the ambient radiation level in Hong Kong has remained normal since the incident occurred on the 5th, the report said, the Hong Kong Security Bureau said.

According to the briefing, the monitoring system showed a very small amount of gas was released briefly when the nuclear power plant staff was performing a special operation of the exhaust gas treatment system of Unit 1 of the Taishan Nuclear Power Station on the 5th.

The incident was promptly dealt with and the amount of gas briefly released was confirmed after inspection to be only 0.00044% of the annual permit limit, the briefing said.

The report also said there are six nuclear power plants in Guangdong, five of which are in operation and one of which is still under construction. Hong Kong people have expressed concern about the safety of nuclear power plants, fearing that in the event of an accident, nuclear radiation would be extended to Hong Kong.
