Israel launches late-night airstrike, destroys Iranian weapons arsenal

The Times of Israel reported in No. 8 that Syria said four soldiers were wounded in an Israeli air strike near Damascus. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the airstrike “destroyed a weapons depot belonging to the Iranians.

Syrian state media reported the attack near the capital, weeks after a weapons depot in the same area was reportedly hit, and Lebanese media reported that anti-aircraft missiles exploded over Lebanon, according to the report.

Israel conducted an airstrike on Syria just after midnight Wednesday, striking targets near Damascus and injuring four soldiers, the latest in a series of Israeli attacks, Syrian state media reported.

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said Syrian air defense forces exchanged fire with Israeli missiles near the capital Damascus, but gave no details of the targets.

The Syrian Arab News Agency said the missiles were fired from the Golan Heights and Lebanese airspace, wounding four soldiers and causing “some material damage.

The Syrian Arab News Agency quoted a military source as saying that “our air defense systems intercepted the attack and shot down most” of the missiles. Defense analysts generally view such claims by the Syrian regime as hollow boasting.

The Lebanese Hezbollah terrorist group’s Beacon TV (Al-Manar) said a Syrian anti-aircraft missile exploded near the Lebanese-Syrian border, and explosions were heard in parts of southern Lebanon. It later said the missile crashed near the village of Houla on the Lebanese border.

The IDF did not comment on the late-night attack and, in line with its policy, neither confirms nor denies its operations in Syria, except for those launched in retaliation for attacks by Israel’s northern neighbor.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the airstrikes targeted “military positions” near Damascus.

They later added that the strikes hit several positions near the city and “destroyed a weapons depot” belonging to the Iranians.

“This is the latest reported attack after nearly a month of Israeli strikes on weapons depots near Damascus airport. “

In February, Israel targeted the Damascus International Airport area, through which Iran has reportedly been transporting advanced weapons and ammunition, and military sites on the outskirts of Damascus, a longtime Iranian base of operations.

Iranian proxies reportedly shipped a shipment of advanced weapons through Iraq to eastern Syria, which was bombed by drones a few days later.

The IDF has launched hundreds of attacks in Syria since the start of the civil war in 2011 in response to Iranian moves to establish a permanent military presence in the country and efforts to send advanced, game-changing weapons to terrorist groups in the region, primarily Hezbollah,.

The situation in the Middle East has been tense in recent months as Iran and the United States wrestle with each other ahead of nuclear talks.
