The announcement comes after Major League Baseball moved its All-Star Game and 2021 draft out of Georgia in protest of a new election reform law passed by Georgia legislators and signed by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp.
Major League Baseball said it chose Denver because the Colorado Rockies were already bidding to host a future All-Star game. The team submitted a detailed plan for a hotel, event venue and security, and Major League Baseball staffers have been to Denver several times in person.
In addition, Colorado Governor Jared Polis and Denver Mayor Michael Hancock have pledged to provide the necessary support for this year’s game to be held in Denver, Major League Baseball said.
Major League Baseball Commissioner Robert Manfred Jr. said in a statement, “Major League Baseball appreciates the support of the Colorado Rockies, the City of Denver and the State of Colorado for this summer’s All-Star Game. We appreciate their flexibility and enthusiasm to provide a first-class event for our game and our region. We look forward to celebrating the best athletes in our sport and bringing joy to fans around the world.”
Colorado Rockies Chief Operating Officer Greg Feasal added, “We are excited to host this year’s All-Star festivities at Coors Field.”
The game will be held on July 13.
A new location for the draft has not been announced.
Critics charge that in practice Colorado’s election laws are similar to Georgia’s.
Sen. Tim Scott, a North Carolina Republican, tweeted, “Georgia: need voter ID, vote 17 days early. Colorado: Voter ID required, 15 days early voting. 51% of Atlanta’s population is black. 9.2 percent of Denver’s population is black.”
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) said on Fox News late Monday (April 5) that the move was confusing when reports began to surface about it.
The Republican said, “Georgia has 17 days of in-person voting ahead of schedule, including two optional Sundays. Colorado has 15 days, as far as I know. They also require a photo ID. That’s incomprehensible to me.”
On Tuesday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki dismissed the notion that the two states have similar laws.
She said, “Colorado allows you to register on Election Day. Colorado has mail-in voting, and they send applications to 100 percent of the people in the state who are eligible to vote by mail. In the 2020 election, 94 percent of people in Colorado voted by mail. They also allow a range of materials, even if they vote on Election Day, when the number of people who vote is limited.”
Psaki claimed that Georgia’s election bill was “built on lies” and that there was widespread fraud in the 2020 election.
And Kemp told reporters over the weekend that Joe State passed the law in part because of changes caused by the outbreak of the COVID-19 (Chinese Communist virus) outbreak before the election.
We have a whole new system in Georgia,” he said. We have things that have never been used before, like drop boxes, at least in recent memory. As a result, there are some mechanical issues that need to be fixed. There’s a reason to find a better way, a more convenient way, a more secure way to hold elections. There’s nothing wrong with that. We shouldn’t apologize for trying to make voting easier and harder to cheat.”
