New York police chief shot himself with a bullet in the police station before committing suicide by calling the police

The U.S. New York Police Department confirmed that New York City’s 107th Precinct Chief, Deputy Inspector Mullaney shot himself in a police car on the afternoon of the 5th, before committing suicide, he had called the Deputy Precinct Chief and said he was considering suicide.

The police department said Mulaney was parked in a police car in Flushing, Queens, near Kessina Park. The deputy commissioner received the call from Mullaney and notified the technical support response team to locate his cell phone. When a large number of officers arrived at the incident around 5:10 p.m., they found Mulaney had pulled the trigger.

According to police records, Mullaney, 43, joined the NYPD in September 2000 and was appointed chief of the 107th Precinct in late 2020. Mullaney is the first active-duty police officer to commit suicide in New York this year. In recent years, there has been a surge in suicides by U.S. officers, with the NYPD dealing with 10 suicides in 2019.
