United Airlines shakes up white-male dominated pilot system with major changes

United Airlines 6 said it intends to train 5,000 pilots in its own flight school over the next decade, with at least half of them to be women and people of color. Reuters said the move would diversify the pilot industry, which has traditionally been dominated by white men.

United public relations director Earnest said, “We want to make sure we’re looking for talent from a big, deep pool, not just from one corner of the pool.”

United intends to hire 10,000 new pilots by 2030, with half of them coming from its own flight schools and the rest from the U.S. Army and other airlines.

United has about 12,000 pilots, about 7 percent of whom are women and 13 percent of whom are people of color.
