On April 5, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) issued a news release stating that two Yemeni men arrested by U.S. Border Patrol for attempting to smuggle themselves into the country were confirmed to be on the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) terrorist watch list.
Border Patrol agents assigned to the El Centro Sector in California were responsible for the two arrests in the past two months.
The first arrest occurred at approximately 1:10 a.m. on Jan. 29, when agents apprehended a man who had illegally entered the United States approximately three miles west of the Calexico Port of Entry. Agents then took the man to the El Centro Processing Center for an immigration status and criminal history review.
As a result of the records review, agents discovered that the 33-year-old illegal immigrant, who was from Yemen, was on the FBI’s Terrorist Watch and No Fly List.
In addition, agents found a cell phone SIM card under the man’s shoe insole. The man is currently being transferred to the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (US Immigration and Customs Enforcement).
The second incident occurred on March 30 at approximately 11:30 p.m. Agents apprehended a man who had entered the United States illegally approximately two miles west of the Calexico Port of Entry. He was then subjected to an immigration status and criminal history check.
Agents then discovered that the 26-year-old illegal immigrant, also from Yemen, was on the FBI’s Terrorist Watch and No Fly List. The man is currently in the custody of the federal agency pending deportation.
Many people living in California were exceptionally upset when the news broke. Ms. Sarah Wang, a San Diego resident, said, “The Biden administration’s misguided policies have led to chaos at the border. Illegal immigrants are now lining up in the ‘open’ to smuggle them in, how many of them are terrorists? How many of them have not been caught and are already in our communities? No one knows, it’s scary.”
On March 17, Stephen Miller, who served as Trump’s senior adviser on immigration in the White House, tweeted, “Professional officials at DHS had warned Biden’s transition team that ending our proven border security measures would lead to disastrous consequences… …but they ignored those warnings and voluntarily created chaos.”
According to the report, former Customs and Border Protection Director Mark Morgan said that as of March 29, the Border Patrol had arrested more than 150,000 illegal border crossers, nearly 50,000 more than in February, in addition to about 26,000 who evaded apprehension.
On March 2, 13 people died in Imperial County, California, near the U.S.-Mexico border, about 125 miles outside of San Diego, when an SUV with 25 illegal immigrants crammed inside collided with a semi-trailer loaded with debris. One of the organizers responsible for this illegal immigrant smuggling and transportation conspiracy has now been apprehended and charged by the United States.
