China’s air and sea to deter Taiwan, scholars expect the real target is the United States

April 5, 2021 – The Communist Party sent 10 military aircraft to break into Taiwan’s southwest air defense identification zone on April 5.

Taiwan’s defense department told the media on Tuesday that the Communist forces sent four J-16 fighter jets, four J-10 fighter jets, one transport-8 anti-submarine aircraft and one air police-500 early warning aircraft to enter Taiwan’s southwest airspace on Monday, with the transport-8 anti-submarine aircraft once flying into Taiwan’s southeastern airspace.

The communist army also confirmed that the Navy aircraft carrier Liaoning fleet, recently in the waters around Taiwan for training. A spokesman for the Communist Party said that the Liaoning carrier formation is testing the effectiveness of troop training according to its annual work plan, which is conducive to improving its ability to safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests. In the future, the Chinese Communist Navy will continue to organize similar exercises and training activities according to the planned norm.

Chen Yixin, professor emeritus of diplomacy and international relations at Tamkang University in Taiwan, believes that the Liaoning’s southward movement and the intrusion of ten PLA aircraft into Taiwan’s southwestern air defense identification zone are mainly related to the presence of U.S. aircraft carriers near the South China Sea, as well as the established military plan of the Communist Party, with the goal of reconnoitering U.S. submarines in the southwestern waters. Regarding the media and political figures’ emphasis on intimidating Taiwan, he believes that it is not Beijing’s real purpose.

Chen Xinxin said: Of course, the Green camp is just trying to boost itself up, the rival of the Chinese Communist Party is the United States, not Taiwan, no matter who is in power. He is really worried about the opponent is the United States, so the Chinese Communist Party’s generals or advocates of unification, the United States as the target, as long as the United States can be subdued, the Chinese Communist Party can attack Taiwan, subdue the attack on Taiwan will have endless consequences.

As for Taiwan’s Tai Luger train accident last week, which killed 50 people, Xi Jinping expressed his condolences and then sent military planes around Taiwan, causing public discontent, Chen Xinxin believes that the Chinese Communist Party will not stop these military operations because of any natural or man-made disasters in Taiwan.

Chen Xinxin said: the massive military aircraft around Taiwan actually has nothing to do with whether there is a disaster in Taiwan, or whether Xi Jinping has expressed any condolences. They are the established plan, that is, the days of each month or the weather factors are also included in the consideration, they are based on their own plans, so there is no Taroko incident, or Xi Jinping has no condolences are not important.

Chen Xinxin said, to ease the cross-strait impasse, the relationship is still in the “1992 Consensus”, Taiwan should at least express some goodwill to ease the tension between the two sides.

Chen Xinxin said: more goodwill actions, cross-strait academic exchanges can also be, including mainland students to come to Taiwan to enjoy insurance, so that land mates can enjoy better treatment and so on. The most important thing about this kind of kung fu is still two keys, one is that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to the Chinese nation, the second is to accept the “1992 Consensus”, can not hide, can not run away. If you accept the “1992 Consensus”, Tsai Ing-wen can still say some words about the two sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to the Chinese nation, this is not said, the “1992 Consensus” is even more impossible to say.

While the Chinese navy was training in the waters around Taiwan and sending warplanes around the country, Beijing’s CCTV broadcast an interview with the first domestic aircraft carrier, Shandong.

The Shandong ship, which began construction in 2013 and will enter service in 2019, is the first independently designed and built aircraft carrier of the Chinese Communist Party, and is more than 20 stories high, more than 300 meters long, and the size of three soccer fields.

The differences between the Shandong and the Liaoning, the first Chinese aircraft carrier converted from a Ukrainian carrier, include an extra layer of glass under the cockpit of the Shandong and a shorter island than the Liaoning, leaving more space for the carrier’s aircraft to operate.

On the other hand, Japan’s Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Unification and Shogunate pointed out that the battle group of the People’s Liberation Navy aircraft carrier Liaoning sailed south into the Pacific Ocean between Okinawa’s main island and Miyako Island last Saturday (3), including the largest Type 055 missile destroyer Nanchang, which is over 10,000 tons. Japan’s Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi said that the activities of Chinese ships and military aircraft tend to be more frequent, and Japan keeps a major concern; and will analyze the movement of Chinese warships this time based on the situation around Japan and the international situation.
