Fauci said on May 5 that he does not think the U.S. government will be the main promoter of vaccine passports.
Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), said on May 5 that the federal government will not force travelers or businesses to use vaccine passports in the wake of the outbreak, and predicted that by the end of this year or early next year, people will be able to enter movie theaters without wearing masks.
Fauci said on the Politico podcast “Dispatch”: “The federal government may be involved to make sure things are done fairly and equitably, but I’m skeptical that the federal government will be the primary driver of vaccine passports.”
Vaccine passports have recently become the latest focus of a bipartisan debate in the U.S. Republicans say vaccine passports are a serious infringement on personal freedom and health choices, and Republican Florida Governor DeSantis even announced a vaccine passport ban on the 2nd.
When asked when the American public can gather in crowded movie theaters without wearing masks, he said, “I think we’ll be able to do that until late fall or early winter,” but stressed that in the meantime, people must continue to wear masks and the government must encourage people to get vaccinated to help stop the spread of the epidemic.
Fauci has made similar predictions before. He said at the New York Press Club in January that if 70 to 85 percent of Americans are vaccinated by mid- to late fall of this year, people can expect to wear masks back to crowded theaters for movies, plays and musicals.
