The incident occurred last Friday (April 2), when Valentin Filatov, chief surgeon of the Cardiology Center of the Amur Region Medical Academy, and seven other medical staff were performing heart surgery in the operating room when the roof of the hospital suddenly caught fire, sending out thick smoke and a fierce fire, and the hospital’s fire alarm went off instantly. A total of 128 people were evacuated.

Despite the fact that the hospital was in flames and the power was out, Filatov and his team did not evacuate and continued to operate on patients.

When firefighters were called to the scene, they learned that there were still eight people in the operating room who had not been evacuated and quickly used electric ventilators to ventilate the operating room, blow out the smoke, and move the patients to an underground operating room for backup power to continue treatment.

It took firefighters two hours to extinguish the blaze, and Filatov and his team, just 29 years old, successfully completed heart surgery on the patient. “My team and I had to save the patient, and we finished everything we were supposed to do.” He said.

The fire engulfed the hospital’s wooden roof, but did not cause any injuries. The patient was transferred to a nearby hospital for further treatment after completing surgery. Antonina Smolina, an ambulance worker, said none of the medical staff at the hospital panicked at the time.

Amur Region Governor Vasily Orlov strongly praised the dedication of the surgical team and also acknowledged the efforts of the firefighters to put out the blaze.

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations said the fire engulfed the wooden roof of the hospital, which was built in 1907, and that the cause of the fire was initially determined to be a short circuit in the electrical wiring.
