NHS England promoted a new breast cancer treatment “Phesgo”, which can reduce the dosing time from the original 2.5 hours to 5 minutes, significantly reducing the risk of infection for patients.
The National Health Service (NHS) is promoting a new breast cancer treatment “Phesgo” across England, which can reduce the dosing time from the original 2.5 hours to 5 minutes, reducing the time breast cancer patients spend in the hospital and thus reducing the risk of contracting Newcastle pneumonia.
The Guardian reports that Phesgo is available for use in “HER2-positive” breast cancer patients, of whom about 15% are HER2-positive. NHS England said the injection could reduce the amount of time breast cancer patients spend in hospital, thereby significantly reducing the risk of contracting the disease.
Delyth Morgan, chief executive of the British cancer charity Breast Cancer Now, said it was good news for thousands of women who would benefit from “faster and friendlier” treatment if the NHS approved Phesgo.
The NHS is under unprecedented pressure due to the impact of c,” Morgan said, “and this more efficient treatment will also save valuable time for health professionals.
NHS England says more than 3,600 new patients will benefit from the therapy each year.
Phesgo is a combination of two drugs, Pertuzumab (Perjeta) and Trastuzumab, into a new fixed-dose combination subcutaneous injection, both of which were previously available as separate intravenous injections.
NHS England noted that the two separate injections, which would have taken 2.5 hours, now take as little as five minutes.
Paula Lamb, 51, of St. Helens, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, was one of the first patients to receive the treatment. Lamb said she is currently being treated with multiple medications, with sessions taking about one and a half to two hours and requiring trips to the hospital once every three weeks. “Receiving the five-minute therapy means I will have more time to walk, grow plants, knit and help my daughter with cricket practice, and it has completely changed my life.”
