The Dutch state news agency reported that about 10,000 people who had been scheduled to receive the treatment have been cancelled due to the decision of the Ministry of Health.
Lareb, the Dutch unit responsible for tracking side effects, said earlier today that it had received five adverse events of blood clots combined with low platelets, including the death of one woman.
The adverse events occurred seven to 10 days after the AZ vaccine was administered, Lareb said, adding that “the patients were all women between the ages of 25 and 65, three had extensive pulmonary embolism, one died and one had a brain hemorrhage.
According to the Dutch Ministry of Health, the moratorium will last until the 7th, when the European Medicines Agency (EMA) is expected to issue updated recommendations, AFP reports. Germany also took a similar decision earlier this week.
Cumulatively, about 1.2 million people in the Netherlands have been diagnosed with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) so far, and more than 16,500 people have died of the disease.
