Recently, a video of nearly 100 Muslims in Pu’er, Yunnan Province, wrapped in body cloths to stop the violent demolition of a mosque by the Chinese Communist authorities has been circulating online. These Muslim believers said they were prepared to die in martyrdom to defend their mosque.
The video posted by netizens shows nearly 100 Muslim worshippers in front of the Thalang Mosque in Mojiang, Pu’er City, Yunnan Province, lined up and singing, all allegedly wrapped in white burial cloths, ready to die in martyrdom to defend their mosque.
Long black banners hung in front of the mosque, reading: “Die for the country without regret for the faith” and “Swear to protect the country’s legitimate religious sites to the death. However, at the same time, the faithful also put up slogans that said they “firmly support the correct leadership of the Communist Party.
In front of the mosque, the Muslim faithful cut out a piece of white cloth and wrapped it around their bodies in preparation for martyrdom.
According to a March 2 report by Free Asia, two mosques were forcibly demolished in late February in Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province, including Daguan County, where the Zhongying Mosque, located in Xiaolongdong Township, was built in the ninth year of the Yongzheng era of the Qing Dynasty, about 300 years ago. Sources said a seminar on the “Sinicization” of Islam was held in the area on Feb. 4, before the demolition.
On or around February 27, more than 100 Muslims in Daguan County, Zhaotong City, reportedly protested the demolition of a local mosque, but were unable to protect the mosque and watched as it was knocked down by an excavator.
In recent years, numerous mosques have been demolished in Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu and Yunnan, where Uighurs and Muslims live, but to no avail. According to scholarly analysis, the authorities are attempting to cut off religious communities in China from overseas through a campaign of “Chinese-ization of Islam.
