Pentagon: Defense Department Asked to Use Barracks to House Border Children

The Department of Defense was recently asked to open military barracks to house refugee children at the border.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently asked the Department of Defense (DOD) to use military bases to house more unaccompanied children arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border in the wave of illegal immigration, the Pentagon revealed Thursday, April 1.

HHS wants the DOD to use Camp Roberts, California, to house unaccompanied migrant children, said DOD press secretary John Kirby. Camp Roberts is a California Army National Guard base in northern San Luis Obispo County. The Defense Department is currently reviewing the request for assistance.

Kirby did not say how many children the base might house.

According to the English-language Epoch Times, the number of people crossing the border is increasing, and children and families traveling alone have filled federal detention centers. U.S. authorities have been releasing families with children under the age of 6 and deporting families with older children without the opportunity to seek asylum.

In recent weeks, thousands of unaccompanied children have been detained by the federal government after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. Former Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Mark Morgan said the Border Patrol apprehended more than 150,000 illegal border crossers last month, 50,000 more than the number in February. Another 30,000 illegal immigrants escaped arrest.

The border crisis issue has now become a political flashpoint for the Biden administration. Republicans and former Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials say the surge in illegal immigration was triggered by lax White House immigration policies. However, President Biden also called former President Trump’s border defense policies “inhumane.

In an April 1 interview with Fox News, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) said the Biden administration is promoting “some of the most evil” business models in the world. The Biden administration is fully aware of the harshness of human trafficking behind the influx of immigrants, but still has policies in place that help criminals.
