Today: Earthquake in Guangdong, Hong Kong felt

This morning (March 2), a 3.7 magnitude earthquake occurred in Heyuan, Guangdong Province, and some people in Shenzhen and Hong Kong also reported tremors.

China’s mainland earthquake network said that a 3.7 magnitude earthquake occurred at 5:40 a.m. on March 2 in Heyuan Dongyuan County, Guangdong Province, with a depth of 10 kilometers. People in Hong Kong, which is adjacent to Guangdong, also reported tremors.

Land media released a surveillance video showing the moment of the earthquake, residents in their sleep were awakened, flocks of birds flying in the air. Some residents’ homes were shaken. One local citizen said he was actually shaken awake by the earthquake.

Another citizen said that usually at this time (5:40 a.m.) no room on the opposite floor of the building is lit, and today I saw that many rooms on the floor were lit, so I must have been awakened by the earthquake.

Some Shenzhen netizens said that the earthquake was also felt in Shenzhen.

The Hong Kong Observatory received reports from about 100 Hong Kong people that they felt the earthquake and the tremor lasted for several seconds.

Preliminary analysis by the Hong Kong Observatory showed that the intensity of the earthquake in Hong Kong was the second degree on the revised Mercalli Intensity Scale, which means that it was felt by people on the upper floors of buildings or in suitable locations and at rest.

Since March 19, earthquakes have occurred almost every day in mainland China, involving at least seven provinces and cities.
