South Korea proposes joint bid for 2032 Olympics to IOC, North Korea unaware

Seoul, South Korea, submitted a proposal to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on April 1 for a joint bid by Seoul and Pyongyang to host the 2032 Olympic Games. The IOC has also accepted the recommendation of the “Olympic Venue Committee” on Feb. 24 that Brisbane, Australia is the preferred city to host the 2032 Olympics, but South Korea still hopes to participate in the bid.

South Korea’s North Korea initially planned to hold consultations on a joint Olympic bid at a leaders’ meeting in Pyongyang in the second half of 2018, but the matter has been delayed again and again since bilateral relations have been deteriorating since 2019.

The city of Seoul said it regretted that the IOC had chosen Brisbane as its preferred host city, but the host has not yet been finalized, and the city has been coordinating and communicating with the IOC, so it submitted its proposal on the 1st.

South Korea submitted its proposal with the vision of “Beyond Boundaries, Towards the Future. In a statement, it reads, “The city government needs to co-host the Olympic Games and emphasizes that it hopes to realize the IOC’s vision of international peace through sports and by co-hosting.”

When asked if the idea was shared with Pyongyang, an official said the proposal was the result of an internal agency meeting and that the Unification Ministry, which is in charge of affairs between the two countries, would seek discussions with North Korea.
