A man suspected of attacking an Asian woman in New York has been arrested. Surveillance video of the attack has sparked widespread condemnation.
Police say Brandon Elliot, 38, is the man shown in the video attacking the woman in midtown Manhattan in New York City on Monday (March 29). Police said Elliot was staying at a hotel that doubled as a homeless shelter, just a few blocks from the scene of the attack.
Elliott was convicted in 2002 of stabbing his mother to death in the Bronx. He was 19 years old at the Time. He was released from prison in 2019 and is currently on Life parole.
Elliott is currently facing charges for Monday’s attack, including assault as a hate crime, attempted assault as a hate crime, assault and attempted assault, according to police.
The victim in the video was identified as 65-year-old Vilma Kari, an immigrant from the Philippines.
On Monday, Kari was walking to church in midtown Manhattan when police said a man kicked her in the stomach, knocked her to the ground and stomped on her face with his foot, screamed insulting words about Asians and told her, “You don’t belong here,” before taking off.
Monday’s attack is the latest in a nationwide wave of suspected hate crimes against Asians. These incidents include the shooting in Atlanta. Eight people were killed in that shooting, including six Asian women.
The recent spike in violence against Asians is believed to be related in part to the misplaced blame placed on Asians for the ongoing new crown Epidemic.
