Czech billionaire “Peter Kellner” is killed in a plane crash. His company, Gitzo Group, is the only wholly foreign-owned financial company licensed to provide consumer finance in China, with operations in China, Central and Eastern Europe, South Asia and Southeast Asia. During his lifetime, Kellner was accused of helping the Chinese Communist Party expand its influence abroad.
Petr Kellner, the richest man in the Czech Republic and founder of PPF Group, was killed in a helicopter crash in Alaska on Saturday (March 27). The news was confirmed by PPF on March 29th.
According to Sina Finance 29, Home Credit BV, a wholly owned subsidiary of PPF Group, entered China in 2010 only three years after receiving the first consumer finance license, becoming the first wholly foreign-owned consumer finance company in China; its total assets reached 22.5 billion euros by the end of June last year. According to a report by Czech media outlet Aktualne.cz on December 11 last year, Gitzo placed paid advertisements on Info.cz, the main Czech website, with articles promoting the Chinese Communist Party. Through Sinoskop, a think tank it controls, Gitzo also conducts regular media interviews to spread pro-Communist opinion.
“Tuan Media revealed on November 19, 2020, that Kellner, the de facto controller of Gitzo, was one of two intermediaries who brought Czech President Zeman and the CCP together, the other being China’s Huaxin Energy Chairman Ye Jianming.
With the help of Kellner and others, Czech President Zeman and Xi Jinping exchanged state visits and signed a number of agreements, including the “One Belt, One Road” agreement.
In 2018, Kellner’s PPF Group and CITIC signed a memorandum of strategic cooperation as part of the Czech-Chinese “New Silk Road” plan, and in April 2020, CITIC acquired a majority stake in Medea, the largest media group in the Czech Republic, becoming a member of the Communist Party of China (CPC). The investigation into why the helicopter Kellner was riding in crashed is still underway.
