Evergreen Marine container ship “Chang Chi ship” stranded in the Suez Canal in Egypt for six days, causing global maritime traffic chaos. The Suez Canal Authority released a statement at about 5 a.m. local time this morning (11 a.m. BST today) saying, “Towing operations to refloat the Ever Given have begun with the assistance of 10 giant tugboats.”
Videos posted on social media show the Ever Given’s stern appearing to swing, giving the river some extra room.
The head of the Suez Canal Authority, Osama Rabie, said in a statement, “The ship has been redirected 80 percent. The stern of the ship was moved to 102 meters from the shore.” The stern of the Nagachi was originally located only 4 meters from the river bank.
The official statement from the owner of the Changci ship, Nippon Shoryu Kisen Kaisha, said that the hull of the Changci ship “was originally stuck in the canal at an angle of 30 degrees, but the situation has been alleviated,” adding that the Changci ship “has turned” but “has not yet floated “.
Inchcape, a marine service provider, tweeted that the vessel had “successfully refloated” and was “being protected”.
However, it is not clear when canal traffic will resume operations.
