Former President Trump said in an interview with Fox News Saturday night (March 27) that he would prefer to go to the U.S.-Mexico border as soon as possible because federal officials are struggling to deal with the increase in illegal border crossings. He said he didn’t “want to race (Biden), just solve the problem” and that Biden was “supposed to be there” (but he wasn’t).
A lot of people want me to do this,” Trump said, including border patrol agents. He said, “(Border agents) they want me to go see, they’ve asked me to go, and I really feel like I owe it to them. They’re great people, they’re doing a great job. And (the Biden Administration‘s approach) has made a lot of things impossible.”
He said the state of the border has now caused relations between the U.S. and Mexico to take a sharp turn for the worse.
Trump said relations between the U.S. and Mexico had been good during his term, but now, countless migrants are pouring into Mexico and entering the U.S. through the border, which has made Mexico “very angry with us.”
Biden reversed some of the key measures implemented by the Trump Administration to strengthen border security, such as the policy of letting refugees stay in Mexico pending asylum approval, and reintroduced the so-called “catch and release” program, which allows illegal immigrants seeking asylum to be released across the United States pending court hearings, ICE officials denounced. Under the policy, refugees rarely appear at court hearings once they enter the United States. And generally less than one in five asylum applications (for which they qualify) are granted.
Conservatives decry that the Biden administration’s policy has led to illegal border crossings for immigrants, recording an influx of more than 100,000 in February alone. The influx of unaccompanied children in particular has created a serious humanitarian crisis. Biden administration officials continue to defend the change in policy, calling the measure to allow immigrants to enter the country “humane.
Trump pointed out that the approach to the border is not to compete with Biden, but to do what should be done.
He said on Saturday that the situation will probably get worse. He said, “As we speak, thousands of people are coming out. There are going to be millions of people pouring into our country, and that’s going to destroy our country.”
“I don’t know what they’re doing, and they don’t know what they’re doing themselves. It’s a very, very dangerous situation. I wish I hadn’t gotten involved in it. Somebody else should be doing it.”
While Trump said he is in no hurry to go, he said the visit to the border will likely be in the next few weeks.
He said Biden “should be there,” adding, “I don’t want to do the race, I just want to solve the problem.”
Trump said he was driven to the border by “this respect that I have for Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
And the White House said Biden still does not have any plans to visit the border at this Time.
Biden recently appointed Vice President Harris (Kamala Harris) to handle the border crisis. And Harris (Harris) said in an interview with CBS last week that she would travel to the border in the future.
“At some point, we’ll absolutely go down to the border and look at it,” she said. “And I’ve been to the border, our Secretary of Homeland Security Alex Mayorkas has been there twice. And a lot of senior government officials have been there, and yes, we will go there.”
She said, “But the reality is also that we need to deal with the root causes in addition to the border. We need to deal with what’s happening in the Northern Triangle – the three source countries for refugees in China and the United States – and address it in a way that not only involves diplomacy but brings our allies together.” “To deal with the work that we need to assist to carry out in a way that is around developing countries so that we also deal with the reasons why people are coming into our countries.”
